Second Sight Productions    Video Producer
I produce documentary and dramatic short films, corporate communications training materials and still commercial photography. My most recent production, “The River Under the City of Angels” http://www.fredkaplan/lariver.html explores the restoration of the environmentally challenged Los Angeles River. It is distributed on youtube, vimeo and vopod and has been seen in 16 countries. This inspirational and empowering story details how the river’s restoration can transform and unite a city.

Second Sight has created teams of experts to consulted with PEG and community television stations to develop fund raising and programming strategies. The focus of these consultations has been collaborative partnerships
between non-profit agencies and governmental organizations sharing productions costs and bandwidth to communicate each organization’s unique message. Second Sight Productions has developed multi-generational computer training modules.

I have produced and directed more than 100 training videos on a wide variety of topics. Clients include: United Way, City of Burbank, City of Oakland, NBC, Clinique, Macy’s, Santa Monica Malibu School District, Mattel Toys, City of Los Angeles, Friends of the Los Angeles River, Northeast Trees. Fox Television, Giorgio Beverly Hills, Strouds Linens, Disney Stores and more

KZSW TV     Production Manager/ Producer
As the Production Manager I oversaw four departments of a local independently owned television station, News Production, Commercial Production, Original Programming and Internet Production.

The News Production Department produced a daily one-hour live news broadcast with 5 on-air personalities and a crew of 6. The Commercial Production Department worked with local business to create marketing strategies while creating over 100 30-second commercials annually. The Original Programming department oversaw the production of Chiller Theater, Wild West Games and infomercials. I monetized the companies website and oversaw the addition features such as an automated television program guide, real-time weather forecasts and real-time traffic reports. I developed training programs for the staff. I worked with local businesses and Cub Scout troops on community out reach.

KZSW provided the only television coverage of local forest and wildfires in the fall 2007. The 24 hours a day coverage provided residents with the only media access to the fire department officials through phone interviews on the fire lines. An edited version of the highlights of that coverage was used in FCC hearings on the licensing of local LP television licenses January 2, 2008.

I developed and worked within the guidelines of annual budgets, I created and oversaw print and broadcast advertising for the station.

NBC/ Tonight Show    Graphic Effects Editor
I worked on over 600 shows as daily hire/ vacation replacement on the nationally broadcasted show. Created title graphics for comedy routines on extremely tight deadlines.  Edited video that played during the opening monologue. Operated video computers that played animated bumpers in and out of commercials. Took cues from the show’s director. Performed as a live sub-switcher under the technical director to switch between 10 cameras and 5 graphic video feeds. I edited visual highlights of the show that were played back at the end of the live show during the credits. I worked with the show’s writers, directors, producers and guests. I trained the show’s staff in After Effects and Photoshop use. I used Final Cut, After Effects, Lightwave, Photoshop and a variety of real-time keying.
I operated a Sony DFS-300 Production Switcher.

Burbank TV6     Graphic Designer
Created the station identity graphics package that included the animated station ID graphics, animated bumpers, animated show opens for individual programs, and still graphics for live broadcasts, elections and other special events. I received a Los Angeles Area Emmy for my work on Teens In Action “What’s Love Got To Do with It” show on teen violence in 2005. I operated handheld and tripod based video cameras for local programs and special event programming. I created the all the station’s lower third graphics and program schedule using Chyron software, after effects, Lightwave, Maya, Vue and many other graphic software packages.
